So, how much is a personal trainer?

The short answer is the classic ‘how long is a piece of string…’

In fact, how much you pay very much depends on a number of factors.

We thought a good place to start would be to discuss the benefits of having a personal trainer.


First and foremost, a personal trainer should have considerable knowledge around exercise, mobility and general health and wellness.

In an industry that is full of myths and people trying to make a quick few quid, this knowledge should give you clarity to help you achieve your goals.

Support and Guidance

A personal trainer should offer you loads of support – both inside and outside of the gym environment!

The first time stepping into a gym can be daunting, and is even more so when you’ve been given a 10 minute induction and barely shown how to use the equipment.

A personal trainer should give you all the support and guidance you need, so that you feel more confident and able to achieve a super effective workout.

A personal trainer should build you up, not break you down! After each session you should leave looking forward to the next. If your personal trainer is pushing you to your limits each session, then maybe it’s time you look elsewhere as this isn’t going to lead to you building a sustainable exercise routine!

A personal trainers, despite the personal nature of the service they are providing, should always remain professional. The support shouldn’t go beyond health and wellness. This a topic for another day.

Do you hit the snooze button on your alarm clock when you had intended to be getting ready for the gym?

If so, having a personal trainer should give you that extra motivation to get you up and off to the gym, firstly, because you’ve booked and paid for the session, but more importantly the personal trainer should have inspired you to actually somewhat enjoy training. The sessions should be challenging and well thought out so you leave feeling like you’ve accomplished something and have moved the needle in the right direction.

Please note I’m saying ‘should’ because the barrier to becoming a personal trainer is low…

This means that (unfortunately) the industry has a number of personal trainers that will not have the knowledge or be able to provide the structure and guidance in the gym yet – again a topic for another day!

Now of course, having a personal trainer has additional benefits such as:

Now, here’s where it gets interesting…

How much should I pay for a personal trainer?

A personal trainer can vary from £10 – £60+ per hour (and even higher in certain parts of the UK), but why is the gap so big and why can it be so pricey?

Well, it comes down to those benefits of having a personal trainer that we discussed earlier.


A more expensive personal trainer is likely to have greater knowledge!

This is because they’ve spent time and money mastering their craft. This could be additional coaching courses, combined with years of coaching experience.

Why is more knowledge that important?

Well, the most important factor is that you stay safe whilst training. Of course the greater your personal trainer’s knowledge of the body and how it moves, the lower your risk of injury!

Knowledge will mean that you achieve a much more effective workout and get the most out of the session. Which is the whole point!

It’s like any profession, typically the more qualified and experience the professional – the higher price they charge.

Structure and Guidance

Similar to knowledge, a personal trainer that costs £60+ per hour, should be able to provide much more detailed structure and guidance.

Throughout your session, an experienced coach should be giving you coaching points and guiding you through a well thought out programme that helps you achieve your goals.

Ultimately, this level of coaching will mean you move better, feel better and achieve your goals much quicker (and stay injury free!).

A professional service – a higher priced personal trainer should have a much more streamline and professional business. They should have systems in place that make your life as a customer super easy!

Saying this, ALL personal trainers should have professional systems in place – no matter how much they charge. For example, has your personal trainer asked you to sign a Par-Q? Is it cash in hand? Or do they have proper membership packages?

Again, another topic for another (this lists of topics is getting longer and longer!).

So, how much should I be paying for a personal trainer?

This completely depends on again loads of factors! Including:

  • Budget
  • Age
  • Fitness level
  • Injuries
  • Goals

To name a few!

Here is an example:

If you have the budget and need a lot of structure, guidance and support because you’re recovering from an injury, an experienced coach would be what you need.

Therefore, you’ll be looking at the upper end of the price spectrum.

Again, if you’re experienced in the gym but want to push on more to achieve your goals, you’ll need a coach that can add value and knowledge to your sessions!

So again, the higher end of the spectrum.

You can see where I’m going with this. The greater your need for knowledge, structure, guidance and motivation – the higher the price point.

What happens if I can’t afford it?

Well, this is where small group personal training comes into its own!

Ultimately, small group personal training is a super cost effective way of training. At INTENT91 for example, our sessions average out at £25 – £30 per hour!

Our coaches have years of experience and would be charging a lot more per hour if they were training people 1-2-1. They have spent time and money truly mastering their craft by completing additional courses from the PFCA, The IFBA and other places.

So, why is small group personal training more cost effective?

Well groups are up to 6 people, which allows the coach to lower their prices per person.

This is not to say lower priced 1-2-1 personal trainers haven’t got their place.

If you’re a recently qualified personal trainer, of course, your prices will be slightly lower as you’re still learning your craft.

For those that prefer 1-2-1 coaching and maybe haven’t quite got the budget, then a lower priced personal trainer will be a great place to get started.

At the end of the day, the goal is to get as many people moving – both safely and optimally so they feel amazing and start becoming the best version of themselves.

So, if a lower priced personal trainer fulfils your needs, then perfect!

How do I find the perfect personal trainer for me?

Once you’ve decided on your budget, finding the perfect personal trainer can be difficult.

Here are our top tips for finding a personal trainer that suits you:

  • Ask a friend

There is no better place to start than asking someone you trust for their recommendation.

Word of mouth is a personal trainers biggest marketing tool, if they’re a good personal trainer, people will shout about it! So, that’s 100% the best place to start.

Do they post testimonials from clients (ideally videos) and do these testimonials relate to you.

Are the people similar age to you? Do they mention the same goals?

Below is an example of the type of content you should keep an eye out for!

Do they post educational content? This is evidence that they actually have the knowledge.

Do you get the feel that you can know, like and trust them?

  • Test the waters!

Many personal trainers offer trials or taster sessions, like dating – its rare that you will find the one on the first date. Similar with a personal trainer, you need to see what’s out there!
