Comparison is the Thief of Joy

We are all guilty of comparing of ourselves to others. We compare ourselves to how someone else looks physically, the exercises they are doing, the weights they are lifting and the calories they are burning - the list is endless.

I’m very guilty of this myself, when I started my health and fitness journey I used to look to Instagram influencers that I followed and think I want to have that girl’s abs, her quads and so on. At this time I was chasing aesthetic-based goals and my aim was to look like these individuals. It took a long while for me to realise that I was never going to look like these people, I could only become the best version of myself.

Most of the time we have no idea about the other person’s journey, their genetics, how long they’ve been training and their personal goals. When we compare ourselves with others, we just make ourselves feel insufficient.

As I progressed I then began to compare myself to others in other ways, how much weight another girl could deadlift, how fast someone else could run 5km. I didn’t realise at the time how this wasn’t helping my progress at all, especially mentally. I felt that I wasn’t strong enough or good enough, when I was actually doing really well for my body weight and level of experience in the gym.

It wasn’t until I shifted my mindset and really started to enjoy my own progress and gains that I felt truly happy and proud of myself.

It’s so important to take inspiration from others, whilst putting it into the context of your own life. Don’t be disheartened by someone else’s highlight reel on social media. I focus on surrounding myself with other like minded individuals that motivate and inspire me because I know their realities and this pushes me to be better!

When I started to be inspired by what others were doing but not worrying about the numbers, it was incredibly powerful. I now only compete with myself, constantly striving to improve what I do. Some days I won’t improve and others I will, and that’s fine too but when we achieve a personal best or improve on something, the sense of accomplishment is amazing! I cannot express how important it is to be kind to yourself!
