When looking to take the next step with your health and fitness, picking a personal trainer is a big investment.

With the rise in online coaching and social media presence, there is a huge choice when it comes to picking the right person for you.

Alongside someone who knows what they are talking about when it comes to exercise, you may also need to consider nutrition support, a friendly community and empathy amongst other things.

When it comes to personal training, everyone has to go through the same basic qualification, but after this is gained, trainers will often go down different education routes or follow different passions.

Regardless of the reason you are looking for a personal trainer, you should seek someone who has experience in helping people like you in the areas you need help.

  • Are they relatable?

There is a certain amount of empathy and understanding required in a personal training relationship.

If you are a 40-year-old Mum of 3 then training with a 19-year-old male trainer that is still living at home is unlikely to work well. They will find it hard to relate to you being up all night with a sick child or understand why you haven’t prepped your meals down to the correct gram of macronutrients.

Finding someone who can relate to your situation and adjust your training to suit will dramatically increase your chances of things working out.

Another good measure of this is the content that they are putting out on social media. Are they adding value and helping people for free, have you seen them post about certain topics on Instagram that resonate with you… do they speak in your language or are they being overly technical?

  • Do you get the feeling that you will get on with them?

Spending your money and more importantly your time with someone for a few hours each week is a big step – so you need to make sure that you actually get on. When speaking to this person or looking on their social media, do you get the feeling that they are likeable and on your wavelength?

You don’t have to become best friends but are they friendly, chatty and welcoming with a good sense of humour? It is likely that you will look forward to your sessions and increase your chances of showing up if you genuinely enjoy spending time with your trainer.

Sometimes it is also about more than just the trainer… for example with small group personal training, you may share your sessions with other people in a similar position to you? Has the trainer built a community?

  • Do they work within a reasonable distance of your home or gym?

We know that in order to be consistent with your training over the long term – you have to make things as easy as possible. Driving 40 minutes each way through rush hour traffic will significantly lower your chances of attending your sessions.

Finding a personal trainer near to home or to/from your place of work will make your life so much easier and reduce the friction to getting in for sessions.

  • Do they offer sessions at a time that works for you?

Similar to above… If you are rushing to sessions or constantly getting caught up on the school run then it is unlikely to be a long-term solution. Finding a form of exercise that fits with your diary will be a game changer.

For example, a 1-2-1 personal trainer may require you to book the same slots each week at a time that fits their diary, whereas a small group personal training or class-based gym will have a flexible booking system where you can drop in on sessions around your schedule.
