Gyms are open

Finally, some fantastic news! Gyms will remain open during the second wave of COVID-19.

According to HCM, it is understood that leisure centers and gyms will remain open and not be forced to automatically close in areas in the UK deemed ‘high risk’.  Also known in the government three-tier COVID alert system as ‘tier 3’. The decision is following an uproar from ministers and gym professionals in Liverpool, Manchester, and Lancashire.

Steve Rotheram, the mayor of Liverpool announced on Wednesday morning that gyms would be able to reopen within that region. It was debated deep into Tuesday night, and the UK government failed to provide any substantial evidence of the dangers of gyms being open during the pandemic (The Guardian).

Liz Terry, editor of HCM has strongly argued that gyms support the NHS’ aims to both protect and prevent the spread of the disease.

Physical exercise is not only extremely important to prevent obesity, type 2 diabetes, strokes, and many more illnesses (NHS.gov).  It has been proven that your physical health is critical to fighting off COVID-19.

Lockdown is continuously proving to be extremely tough on a lot of people’s mental health. Across the country with 45% of the UK population feeling anxious or worried regarding the situation, 18% feeling afraid and 15% feeling hopeless (Mentalhealth.org).

The NHS suggests that anyone struggling with mental health problems such as anxiety should take part in exercise 3 times a week. However, with days becoming shorter and temperatures dropping outside will become increasingly difficult! This is identifying the importance of gyms in our society.
