With access to so much information at just the click of a finger away, it’s easy to end up confused and misled.

We hope this blog shines some light on a topic that is highly saturated with myths and wrong information. The following myths are some of the most common we hear at Intent91.

Myth 1: Core Exercise Will Burn Stomach Fat

Core exercises are a fundamental part of our program blueprint at Intent91, the main reason being to improve performance and reduce the risk of injury.

Unfortunately, it’s impossible for us to spot reduce fat, you’ll lose body fat around the stomach when you’re consistently achieving an energy deficit, patience and persistence is key.

Myth 2: Cardio Is Best For Weight Loss

Although cardiovascular training is a great tool that can compliment your weight loss journey, it’s not cardio training alone that will elicit weight loss. The energy deficit you’re creating as a result of consuming fewer calories and burning more energy will.

Cardio has many health benefits, hence why we include our ‘Sweat’ class in the timetable at Intent91.

Myth 3: Carbs Make You Fat

No one individual nutrient will make you put on weight, over-consuming any form of food or drink will lead to weight gain. Carbs are a fantastic energy source and more importantly, they taste great (who doesn’t love a pizza!).

Oh, and carbs after 6pm is also a myth for the reasons stated above.

Myth 4: Foods Labelled Low/Reduced Fat Are Always A Healthy Choice

Be cautious here, this isn’t always the case.

Usually, foods that have had fat reduced tend to be higher in something else – the usual culprit being sugar.

Next time you go for the pre-packaged ‘healthier’ option take a look at the calorie/ingredient content first, it may be surprising.

Myth 5: Starving Myself Of The Food I Enjoy Is The Best Way To Lose Weight

This couldn’t be further from the truth, this type of ‘diet’ will not be sustainable, enjoyable, or maintainable. You will be low on energy, miss out on vital nutrients as food choices will be minimal.

This type of thought process leads to cravings. You will then end up binging and getting into an unhealthy cycle with food = weight gain!
